Spring Awakening, written in 1890, is about the dissemination of knowledge. Every action is an attempt to gain or is the result of the lack of knowledge. The children are desperate for a real education yet the adults in their lives collude to enforce their ignorance.
The costumes were designed to clearly demarcate children from adults, representing spring for the former in light, warm colors and cold, dark winter for the latter.
