In Your Left Ear
Gypsy of the Year, Best Performance
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, New York, NY
In Your Left Ear was an homage to choreographer Ray Mercer’s grandmother, who urged her grandson to always listen to his intuition, to the voice in his left ear. This piece explored familial relationships and loving understanding and the costumes represented the subtlety and softness found in such unconditional love.
Flowing fabrics swirled around soaring dancers’ bodies, adding another active element. Both dancers and singers were dressed in a warm palette of browns, tans, and grays, further referencing the wide range of skin tones visible in the piece, and in the larger world.
